Hernia operation on a 12 yr old girl
16 Answers
Hi all
Just got back from the hospital where my 12 year old daughter has been diagnosed with a hernia and told they will need to do a small operation.
I understand it is more common in boys but was just wondering if anyone here has experience of this? I guess I'm stressing at the thought of her having to have an operation even tho I do understand it is a straight forward procedure, I think hearing about others experiences may help me a little bit.
Thanx

Yeah I feel a better about it after reading up on it a bit, I guess it's the thought of her going under that scares me.
My husband has been in and out of hospital most of his life, more so in the last 10 years and I guess from seeing all that the thought of her being in there scares the Sugar out of me. Just hope we don't have to wait long to see the surgeon and get this over and done with.

Hi ~Wingnut~, I had a hernia on one of my ovaries at six months and had surgery then for it and I'm still thriving at the age of 31 so I imagine the technology has come on in leaps and bounds since then. Hernias do tend to be a bit of 'bread 'n' butter' type surgeries I think so try not to worry too much. My personal experience is that it'll all be ok :c)
I agree with Squad - no big deal.
I had a hernia operation 14 weeks ago - I was in hospital for all of 6 hours!
It was very sore for 2-3 days afterwards, but they give you really good painkilling tablets, which I needed for 5 days.
I believe keyhole surgery (not an option in my case) causes even less discomfort.
Then, it's uncomfortable for a while, but gets gradually better.
I'm now fully recovered - spent today loading 6 tons of rubble into a skip!
I'm male, and a lot older than 12 - so your daughter should recover much faster.

Apparently so Sqad, or at least according to mum, I'm a little hazy on the details. I know they had a devil of a time finding the left one when I ghad an ultrasound at 15, the left one sits a bit lower than the right or something (they think) as a result of the surgery... It was keyhole through the belly button so I'm told. It's never really bothered me so I've never really asked that many questions about it, didn't even know I'd had it until that hospital stay that resulted in the ultrasound and the resulting conversation about the left ovary sitting lower.
Or maybe it was the right. <shrug>, clearly whatever it was hasn't effected life too much thus far!

I had an inguinal hernia repair just a few weeks ago, I spent about 15 hours in hospital in total, I got a 6inch wound under a general anesthetic. A lot of burning sensation and pain, I think from nerve damage. I couldn't walk properly for about 2 weeks and 4 weeks off work, I'm still struggling with the wound a bit, but its healing and I'm back to work.
Bigger op than I was lead to believe and longer recovery but I'm happy to have it sorted at long last.
