Does anyone know of a budget method of rainwater filtration that allows water to suitable for feeding to pigeons?

I have the top fitted with a mesh screen, the mesh being about the size of a window type screen. It does very well as filtering out leaves and other debris... so much so that we use it for small animal watering since it's closer to their area than any outside spigot we have... works good for plant watering as well...
Old tights work well but don't last long. A large nylon sock works just as well and lasts longer.
