Internet access problem on laptop

Hi everybody,

I have a laptop which has Windows 2000 on it. I have put my Virgin Media Ethernet lead into it (I have also bought a brand new one as well). All I get is a screen saying "cannot find server". I have taken it into a computer shop and it WILL work in the shop. Virgin Media are saying there is nothing more they can do as it doesn't sound like it has an internet card in the laptop but it has because it was running in the shop. Could it be a problem with Windows 2000.

Many thanks to all who take the time in reading the above and maybe even replying.

I'm not sure about this but maybe it's something to do with bad reception facilities in the area you live in? Near where i live we have lots of train tracks and trains running through the town and its quite bad internet reception and phone reception too :( Sorry if this is of no help, xx
Also you might get more help if you put this in technology under computers, :D x

Thanks for this and yes I did put it in Technology around the same time as Chatterbank but hadn't ticked the subscribe button and couldn't understand why I wasn't getting any replies.
Try going into your device manager (go through Control Panel, system, hardware) and check to see if your ethernet controller and internet card are installed and have the right drivers. I was having this problem for ages and my ethernet controller had packed in on me - I could get internet access sometimes but not others. I ended up getting a new wireless card from virgin, and setting up a router and there's been no problems since.
