water temp with ear thermometer

I want to check the temperature of my fishtank water, but the only thermometer we have is one of those ear ones.

Is the tip waterproof? seeing and it's ok to get gung and stuff on it?

those ear ones usually come with hygienic covers. I think they are waterproof.
Place the whole thermometer in a small clean polythene bag and tie the open end with a knot after getting rid of the enclosed air. Just thought of a snag - don't ear thermometers have a very limited range,a few degrees either side of body temp, say 35 to 39 degrees C ? Depends what temp you're trying to measure.
