premium bonds

i was at my dads yesterday and he dug out the family photos, and along with them came a premium bond in my name from 1983, my nan bought it for me for my 2nd birthday. The trouble is i havnt got a clue what it is and what its for. My boyfreind said that i can win quite a lot of money from it if it because it goes into a draw and gets pulled out every week. My Nan paid �5 for it, which was a lot of money back then especially for her. can someone tell me some information about it and where i can check to see if i have got any cash out of it. U never know i could be a millionaire!!! (i wish)
