Thanks Jan1956, but the clues are all based around Bedford, the last one being Houghton House. The Roman town has to be 11 miles away from there.

Luton is Lygetun

Dunstable is Durocobrivae

So They are out !

The answers I have so far are:

We assemble in a town = Bedford

Clue 1:A village near to which a 17c author was born = Elstow

Clue 2: Town popular with birds = Sandy or Stratford (but latter is not a town I think)

Clue 3: Father of (English) watchmaking was Tompion (birthplace Ickwell)

Clue 4: birthplace of an admiral shot for losing Minorca (John Byng) = Southill

Clue 5: 18c poet was Bloomfield and he died in Shefford

Clue 6: Ammetelle was Roman name for Ampthill

Clue 7: Bunyan referred to Houghton House as the "House Beautiful"

Any help?

Sorry, I don't do the Times crosswords. The DT GK takes up most of my time.

Cheers

Good  Evening  Top  Cat.   found you at last pages and pages today    Well I agree with your answers and have consulted Books (I have hundreds)  and Maps and the route seems  11 miles from Amphill and the A5120 runs from there to DUNSTABLE  which seems is the Town the Roman Name for Dunstable is  DVROCOBRIVIS. an ancient town on the roman road watling street and the ancient Icknield Way. so what do you think. I know that area have driven en route as don't live so far from there in Cambridgeshire. this week it was a long drawn out with lots to solve.  I wonder how many people enter thousands no doubt. Its good to keep the old grey cells working. I only got laptop in November and been interesting  I won two prizes from local paper last week and 20 daily Mail crossword also last week. On ist of month I say White Rabbits suppose to bring Luck; Hope some help but from Map from Bedford and distances Dunstable looks right.  Good Luck.    K.

I am pretty sure that it is Sandy as that is where the HQ of the RSPB is.

Thanks Pega, but the letters taken from each of the clues (if they are right) don't get me any where near the Roman name for Dunstable, although, as you say, the geography is right.

Also thanks for confirming Sandy. Probably too late to answer by now. When they set a treasure hunt type of quiz it always takes longer but is (usually!) more fun.

Thanks for all the help.

You have until Wednesday midnight to submit an answer on-line, I think

Hello folks.

Try Magiovinium. or Dropshort for short.

Regards

Ted Green

top  cat  I have studied some old books and with the letters I got was looking for a word starting with O but then realised have to make the word and I see someone has suggested  MAGIOVINIUM  which was a major settlement on the Ouzel (river Ouse) Buckingham at Dropshort so seems this is answer as you say fun working this one out and can enter on line still plenty of time.

Thanks to all concerned. Too late now to enter and will await solution in Sunday's Times. Not a quiz that features a lot on this website, but good one to do. I nearly always solve it, so if you need help, don't hesitate to use this excellent website.
