Preservation orders on trees

A friend grew a tree from seed some years ago. The tree has now grown far too high and he would like to have it chopped down. However he is worried that the Council will take him to court even though no order has been put on the tree.
Can he have it removed without any bother?

If there is no order on the tree , just do it.

if it has no TPO on it you can cut it down if you wish!!

people next door did that and it grew so high it was threatening our foundations; meanwhile they'd got old and sick and couldn't do anything with it. So we asked the council and they said 'Yes, cut it down at once', so we did. Everyone happy.
