He was shot in a New York taxi when accompanied by a friend called Mario Amaya (who was also shot).

His friends called him Drella, a contraction of Dracula and Cinderella. Lou Reed's and John Cale's album Songs for Drella is a homage to him.

Why this character rose to fame on the basis of his work is utterly beyond me. I can only put it down to the clamour raised by a bunch of pseuds posing as art critics, who were trying impress their own importance on other people by showing how avant guarde they all were. :-(
