Dog question: Recommendations needed
14 Answers
Hello.
I have heard that Spot on is the best treatment for fleas and ticks on dogs, is this right?
Also I have seen that there are two different types one which you need a prescription for and one that you dont, why is this? Can anyone recommend a good one?
Also recommendations for worming tablets would be appreciated, max always seem to be sick after taking his.
Thanks

As for worming tablets - when we first got him he had been given Milbemax worming tablets which we continued to get from our vet, however they changed to Drontal as they said they were cheaper and just as effective. Our Alfie was sick once after having a worming tablet it was our fault as he was off his food and I completely forgot that it should be given after food and as such it obviously irritated his stomach and came back up. We are always careful now to make sure he has eaten before giving it to him. BTW what breed is Max because I know some worming tablets shouldn't be given to collies, can't remember the reason why off the top of my head.
Spot on (or pipette) is how it is administered. The active ingredient in Frontline, spot on or spray is fipronil, which is a pretty effective flea and tick treatment.
We keep our dogs on milbemax because it is also effective against heartworm. This is starting to be seen on the south of England and I understand that id is common in France and Spain.
What does the vet say about your dog vomitting?

Milbemax wormer can be lethal to some collies, although you can now get them tested to see if they are ok. I will put a link to it. I use Drontal wormer, and for fleas use Frontline (spray) which is only available from vets. I would not use a spot on, because some don't kill fleas, only stop the eggs from hatching. They contain growth inhibitors and stop them breeding, and I am not confident of how this would affect the animal as they are absorbed into the bloodstream.
