I suppose you could read that into it if you tried very hard, but its certainly not how I have ever seen it.

Well what makes me ask that is in the closing scenes in the park when he is reciting Shakespeare he says 'man delighteth not me - no nor women neither' and really labours th 'women neither' bit. I've wondered that for years but nobody else has ever agreed with me.

I have of late, but wherefore I know not, lost all my mirth and indeed it goes so heavily with my disposition that this goodly frame the earth seems to me a sterile promotory; this most excellent canopy the air, look you, this mighty o'rehanging firmament, this majestical roof fretted with golden fire; why, it appeareth nothing to me but a foul and pestilent congregation of vapours. In the original ending, Richard E Grant gets home from saying his goodbyes to Marwood and drinks a shotgun full of Margeaux before blowing his brains out.
