I have a touch screen monitor with on-screen keyboard. The trouble is, my computer won't fire up until there is a physical keyboard plugged in. It tells me, "Keyboard error - press F1 to continue" so I have to plug in the keyboard. All very frustrating. How do I start the computer without the keyboard. I'm running Windows XP

Look for the message at startup that says press **** to enter setup, press the key it tells you to and you will be in the BIOS.

Have a look round for the setting that says something like"halt system on" and change the setting to never or all but keyboard. (either will stop it checking for a keyboard at startup)

Thanks Chuck but I did as you suggested and entered the BIOS screen OK. There's nothing on any of the screens that say'halt system on' or anything referring to the keyboard. Am I looking at the wrong screen?
What is the make and model of the computer?

Or if it's unbranded is there any information in the bios about which bios you have as there are lots of different ones and they are all slightly different.

It's Fujitsu Siemens 'Scenic E Modo'
If I recall correctly on a fujitsu it will be under main system functions and its keyboard check you are looking for, set it to disabled.

There's nothing that says 'main system' at all. I've searched all the screens but the word 'keyboard' doesn't appear anywhere.
OK I've searched and can't find a BIOS manual for that computer.

there will be a setting in the bios somewhere to stop the system halting on bootup errors though (such as keyboard missing)

It's nothing to do with windows, the system is halting before it even starts loading windows.

OK Chuck. Thanks ever so much for your time. I really appreciate it. I'll just have to keep looking.
Best regards

Chuck - I found it. It says 'Start with errors' and I just enabled that. All works fine now. Many thanks
Glad you got it :)
