Should those who work in the Emergency Services be denied the right to strike?

What was the point of them being on the picket line in the first place if they were going to respond to emergencies?
I think the emergency services would get the publics support moreso if they didnt resort to 'strike' action.
As for sqads remark -worst thing which could have happened to give workers the right to withdraw labour.
I was a manager in BT and the management and Unions worked hand in glove-ive been at some of the meetings and i can guarantee that some Union officials have had their hands greased to avert strike action although I didnt witness anything personally
Heads must be buried in the sand if you dont think it doesnt happen at both spectrums of the workforce though.
Money talks-there is no loyalty to the workforce from Union or Management.
Most full time Union reps think they are management within the company.
Might have once been a good idea - eons ago but not in this dog eat dog environment we live and work in nowadays.

It is illegal for our Teacher's union to strike here along with the Emergency Service People. I agree with the poster who said that the working conditions should be such that they don't want to strike. Rather than strike, our union will often have rallies and protests outside the schools on our own time:Before and after work and our lunch period. Puts the fear of God in some of the parents too.

what about us nurses who work like donkeys, often unpaid, less than social workers or teachers and aren't getting a pay rise for two years? oh, and we always get less thaan others in the public sector as well. we are always shat on. end of rant...x

What about my husband who is greatful for a job and hasnt had a pay rise in 10yrs hmm?
OK he isnt an 'angel' but neither are some of the 'angels' i know,They work to rule -if i hear of one more person saying nurses deseve more than others then i'lll blooming scream
I have yet to see a nurse run off her feet -simply cos she doesnt have to.
I know the craic and know how nurses work and they aint angels -they do the minimum required for wagges.Anyway -iof theyre not happy then they know where the dorr is -funny how not a lot walk hmm???

I've got to be honest, I agree with Dris to a certain extent. My mother was recently in Day Case and Endoscopy having her foot seen to and the nurses were rude, arrogant, supercilious and downright obnoxious. I didn't see one of them rushing and there were several elderly patients sat in bed calling for assistance whilst nurses were congregating around reception talking about their various social lives. Conversely, the Doctors were polite, curteous, respectful and seemingly overstretched.

I was in Hospital not too long ago and the old lady next to me was begging for help.
She pressed her buzzer as many times and the nurse just came back and reset it.Eventually I went and comforted the old lady -someones mum, daughter (at some tim) sister (perhaps) but she was just a bleeding nuisance in PRI.
I was foaming and still am -I wont ever treat any nurse other than what they are -someone doing a job.They have bought into the public support and abuse it-time it came back and bit them on the bum -they are just like me my husband my son my daughter -scraping a living..No-oone put a gun to their heads -its difficult emotionally but not mentally
If you want more examples-feel frre but if I were a nurse even a hard workimg decent one I so wouldnt support the ones im talkling about.

For me the real angels - or should I say "heroes" - are the men and women who put their lives on the line fighting insurgents in war-torn countries.

i love the way everyone slags off nurses - they often work overstretched, understaffed in hectic, stressful environments - although i agree some are lazy shites. i'm a mental health nurse and work in similar situations, although i can say hand on heart my team are brilliant, hard working and you can only imagine the broccoli we have to put up with. bet none of you would do it in a million years...
