If GULLY is 40d then the 4th letter of 57a would be Y making it E?PYE??S?S.

GULCH would give the H, but I don't think EUPHEMISMS is right.

Oops my mistake, it is EUPHEMISMS (for some reason I was reading it as BLAND, what a muppet I am) so it must be GULCH.

If it was INEQUITY, that'd make Slimmer T?E?N?R.
