I worked at The Beacon some evenings, it was more cost effective than buying my own drinks! I had a shared house in Parklands Drive, frequent parties, you may even have attended to help solve crosswords! I'd agree that the fodder in PO was not too good, never ate there myself. The golf course was still there when I first arrived, but had gone when I transferred to Chem Eng.
That we are chatting is good fun, but that is of little interest to other EVers. As far as this week is concerned, we have really only DELAYED things! Or should that be hings!

Well done DD, I do believe you've got the pdm. Far too much reminiscing is wasting valuable drinking time! Just as well Ev wasn't too much of a challenge this week, as I've been very busy learning about "Forum posting". My daughter's small publishing company has just launched their new web site and forum.....phew, I'll pass you over to Carolyn, who'll tell you about it.....
Hi guys, sorry for hijacking the nattering and chattering, this is just a small plug for our new forum. The site itself is www.cottage-publications.com and we have a wide range of mainly Irish based books, although we have recently expanded into east Anglia with a number of titles. I'd rather tell you about the forum though (www.cottage-publications.com/forum) which we are hoping will become a bit of a hub for all bibliophiles. A fair bit of it is dedicated to our titles, but I've also set up a non Laurel Cottage section for people to chat (or natter!) about books and beyond. Non LC books can be reviewed here: http://www.cottage-pu...forumdisplay.php?f=43 and off topic banter can be found if you register. (Mum would love some company in there!)
Anyway, hard sell over, I'd love to see some of you over there if you have time, I'm off to watch the football and enjoy a glass of the finest pink wine. Cheers!

Phew is the word Copelander, Carolyn needs to slow down the Sales pitch. Fully understand the enthusiasm, but wow, most customers need to be lead slowly into a position where they feel they need to purchase rather than be subjected to a high speed sales spiel! An element of intrigue might be beneficial!

Hello all, have been busy not only with the endless apples but also had number three son down for the weekend fitting cupboards. He went into the distance last night with huge numbers of apples intent on turning them into cider and 3lbs of blackcurrants for the making of some sort of blackcurrant liqueur. No sooner had he gone than number two son phoned to say he will be visiting for a week from next Saturday, providing he can find the connections to get here from the Isle of Man - not easy
So turned today to EV in between weeding and juicing, and yes, not too much of a challenge except for 21a, which I'm uncertain of. The only word I can find is apparently Spenser's term for a gate, rather than a passage and the connection to a garage excapes me.

Copelander, no need to express any apologies. Having spent some years doing "marketing" I was trying to help with her approach in promoting her product. It is better to guide the potential customer to purchase, rather than be in the modern idiom "in their face"! I have nothing but praise for her enthusiasm and enterprise I wish her well. If I can help, I am happy to do that. I am sorry if I came across other than that. There are few too youngsters out there who are keen enough to "have a go" theirselves. She needs to think, who are the potential customers and how do I get them to react to my advertising". Customers need to be coaxed into buying!
A simple example is when someone is buying a shirt would be for the Sales Person to say "This would be a nice tie to go with that" rather than "Why don't you buy a tie to go with that". Same aim but putting a different "spin" on the sell!

Hello Christina, you fed up of fruit too?
Most interesting about your daughter's pub co copelander, is it only Irish works? Have a half-finished rural tome awaiting some more effort....... Will access her site at a later date. What do you mean reminiscing wasting drinking time? Adds to it I would say!
As to EV, had a bit of a spurt last night having 'clocked' the letter but am no further forward with the quote (all a bit pointless as I'm way behind in the ODQ dept) is on hold at the moment as I'm mid-way towards a deadline and must 'sort out' for a trip to Liverpool tomorrow - a birthday treat to see the Picasso exhibition and have a ride in a duck!
Harlequin in town DocHH & wheatsheaf in Woodhouse E, both for when one was being POSH!

DD, the quote is almost certainly one you will have heard of without needing to resort to ODQ - it could be described as a short pithy saying in frequent and widespread use that expresses a basic truth or practical precept. Also my previous advice (perhaps a bit shorthand) was intended to help, ie don't put off to tomorrow what you can do today!
I had a little look at your daughter's site, Copelander. Very enterprising and nicely laid out - just awaiting some input :) which I hope she gets. I also liked the idea of a 'book club' style thread, working on the basis that like minds tends to congregate. I think that DocHH had some useful points and from my own experience with the great public I recall very clearly that if you approached a sale head on (unless asked for specific advice) you were rarely successful. I must attack the housework today - having put it off for just toooo long; how I hate those useful proverbs! The h-g is of the opinion that if you put something off long enough it won't need doing - I do wish the spiders agreed with him.
Copelander, just hopped onto Carolyn's site. Very elegant, nice design, and the book stacks on the "title bar", give it the "what's in the tin" appearance! I wish her every success. Also quick to hop around. I also think that the site isn't "in your face" and is reasonably targeted to book-worms, luring them in via the chat room! Time for dinner and, yes you guessed it a Tempranillo.
Hi Devadolly, Yes, really fed up. I am slowly suffocating under a mound of cooking and eating apples in the kitchen. I picked what I think is the last of the blackcurrants today, but now I see the plums are ripening. Trouble is I can't bring myself to let them go to waste. It won't be quite so bad next year (I hope) when the garden won't be quite so overgrown. I dare not let up on that whilst the weather holds. As they say, 'time and tide wait for no man', or some such. I am enjoying the garden and the fruit though, just a bit overwhelmed at present.
Well I thought I was going to complete this one in record time this week, but have now been stuck for 2 days on my very final clue, even though I have all but one (or two!) or the letters! For the life of me I cannot fathom what the last letter of 26A can be. Am I having a dense moment? A subtle pointer would be gratefully received. All of the rest has been relatively straightforward.
