When there wasn't enough space to get a word in at the end of a line of type the remaining letters had to be manually justified to make the line lengths even. This was done by inserting additional spacer blanks in the text. Picking which to use, en or em, and where to put them was a valuable skill, particularly if you could do it quickly. If you got it wrong there was nothing to do but throw away the entire line and start again, retype the text and then rejustify it.
