was sorting out some old boxes and found some USA coins thata family friend had given me. since i'm going there in october (47 days, not that i'm counting) i thought i'd check their still valid. a 1988 quarter, a 2000 quarter, a 1981 nickel, a 1979 dime and a 1996 cent. can anyone help?
In law all coins minted by the US Treasury remain legal tender at their face value unless mutilated or unrecognisable, however early coins may acquire greater value to dealers/collectors due to their precious metal content and/or rarity.
Well, not all that worthless... you could buy a daily U.S.Today and have 16 cents left over, you can buy a fairly large candy bar for 50 cents, a medium size bag of peanuts, make a local phone call (if you can find a pay phone)... or you could leave a 66 cent tip to let the waiter know how you really felt about the service (just don't go back there again, however)...
