Malta advice please

Going to try Malta in September for the first ever time. Don't know it at all. Can anyone recommend a good resort to book a holiday? We are middle aged (50's) no kids, just a couple and want relative peace and quiet, a lovely beach, lovely scenery, good bars and eateries, but somewhere to go in the evening thats a bit livelier if we want. TIA

If a "lovely beach" is a high priority I would sugegst you look elsewhere. Malta has many fine qualities but lovely beaches is not really one of them, There are some half decent beaches but they are few and far between.

We are just back from 2 wks in Malta! (We are same age as you too!) We stayed at the North end of the island - at the Melieha Bay Hotel (booked through Portland Travel, part of Thomson group). It was very nice but probably upper 3* rather than the 4* advertised.The hotel has its own sandy beach - sandy beaches are rare in Malta. (Paradise Bay & Golden bay are worth visiting) It was quite quiet but there are local buses very regular and very cheap. (They are very old and very rickety but fun too!) We used them to go to Valetta and from Valetta to Marsaxlokk (a lovely picturesque fishing village) Also went on the hop on hop off bus tour round the North of the island £15. Also went on a day trip to Gozo island, booked through oasis travel in Melieha. (Ferry was 4.65euros each and trip was 11euros each compared with Thomson at 50euros!) Ask me any more questions!

Hiring a car would be a good idea too - we waited till we got there and they were all booked up by then. Driving is on the left and there aren't many roads, so it isn't easy to get lost - all the signs are in english and most maltese speak good english too.

dont forget to spend a day on Gozo, or stay there, we.went to Scilily for the day too, saw Etna etc but coming back the crossing was pretty awful.
