Tips for camping in the wet please
19 Answers
Hello I will be camping at the end on the week in the wet, I have camped before but not so much in the wet I have a new bigger tent which will allow us to keep in the dry, which I am going to practice erecting when it gets drier if it ever does.
Has anyone got tips for wet camping? if the ground is really wet won't the pegs just slide out? I have a tunnel tent which really requires the pegs for the tent to stand up?
Also I can see the ground being muddy and churded up we people and cars like at glastenbury has anyone got any tips to make life easier when everything is covered in mud?
Thanks in advance

Now see, i adore camping, but even I get grumpy (or grumpier) when its wet and muddy constantly!
Make sure you take plenty of warm clothing (surpised how cold you get when wet!) and as many towels as you fit into your car.
If you can chance prior to going, waterseal all the seams on the tent.
Wellies!

take lots of heavy duty bin liners and make sure everything you want to stay dry is inside one of these. take a large piece of tarpaulin and put outside the entrance. insist everyone remove boots before entering tent - put a shallow tray or whatever just inside the entrance to tent for wellies etc to stand in. take slip on croc type shoes for inside tent and keep them clean.
Much depends on the make of your tent. If it is decent quality it will stand up to rain and wind - if not, it is posible that strong wins will drive rain through the outer membrane.
be warned, any wind at all when you're trying to pitch the tent will lead to swearing and arguments. make a plan - make sure all your helpers understand their roles - work from the windward side, pegging this down first before trying to raise the poles.
You should invest in some sturdy plastic pegs. The pegs should go in at an angle so they don't just lift out.
A sheet of builders polythene spread out on the ground before you pitch helps preserve the (inevitably flimsy) integral groundsheet from damage. Just peg straight through the poly - check it in the bin when you leave. Flattened layers of cardboard boxes laid at the tent entrance help to absorb mud and keep the interior drier/ cleaner. Above all, remember never to camp in Britain because it is cold, wet and muddy.

Make sure you have nice cosy chairs to sit back in. I've had some great camping experiences in the rain, sometimes its just nice to sit inside your tent with a nice warm cup of coffee or a bottle of beer and watch the world go by. My main tent (I have a few) has big triangular windows and a zip-up front that doesn't let the rain in.
