Tirel was allowed to escape and Henry gave special favours to his wife's family, the Clares of Essex who were close friends of the new king and who were also in the hunting party when the fatal arrow was fired.
William's biographer was a monk who didnt give him a good write up....William clearly didnt like women an awful lot but what really made the monk's quill shake - as he murmured, 'this is outrageous !' was that William had been seen in a castle, before the fire, drinking with his frenz, not wearing an awful lot.
