Which insect is attracted toward smoke ?

Hi boys and girls !

I learnt about thirty years ago that there was one insect that bit man and was a vector of something awful, flew towards smoke and not away, unlike all other insects, because that was where the humans were.....

I thought it was Chrysops - but googling that, it almost certainly can't be.....
