Would you believe that in the space of One Month, the price of petrol at my local garage has shot up by 4p/Litre. 93.9 and 99.9. Totally scandalous that it takes 40 to fill up a Focus. Rant Over.

Holy moley!! Is that for standard unleaded? I always thought that the day the litre counter goes up at the same speed as (or slower than) the counter on a fuel pump we might as well stop living. It seems that time is nearly upon us.
Prices will rise yet more, my friend. Before we get into the "All petrol companies are robbers" rant, think on this : Pump prices are made up of fuel cost + Customs duty + VAT. I think Uk has amongst the lowest actual fuel cost in EU, but we have amongst highest duty/tax regime. So, every time crude goes up in price and road fuel goes up, so does tax.................and, in case you missed it, we're all paying VAT not just on the fuel cost, but on the duty as well. Tax on a tax ? Neat trick huh ? Shout at your local MP, not the fuel companies; they're just tax collectors.

Now is a good time to start driving more carefully e.g. not trying to be the first away from the lights, keeping foot off gas pedal, slowing down in plenty of time, keeping to or under speed limits (yes I know car is most efficient at 55mph, but not in built up area please!).

I also discovered that buying the higher octane dearer petrol is in fact a svaing as my car mysteriously increaed its miles per gallon from averaging 28 on ordinary petrol to 33 on the premium version. I measured this over several brimtop fills and a mixture of urban and country driving.

i also get higher mpg on super unleaded
