A work colleague of mine visited his GP for a medical for renewal of his HGV licence .

After undergoing an ECG , his gp was worried about the results and referred him to a heart consultant .

It transpires that 2 of 3 valves which meet at a junction were totally blocked and the third was almost blocked . ( he had no symptoms )
The consultant advise him that he was extremely lucky to have visited his gp when he did , otherwise he was on his way to an eminent major heart attack , which would have been lights out .

He had to have a major operation and is back at work now .

On a previous visit to my gp , the nurse advise me that they offered an ECG to patients .
I made appointments and forgot to go on 2 occasions .

I went to the third appointment today and the result is that i'm ok .

You might wish to see if your GP practice offers this service , and take advantage of it .

Sqad, it's like the warning on a packet of aspirins... 'may cause headaches'. Warning on a box of ECGs: 'May cause heart attacks'.

Actually when we Carakeel got her new phone a a couple of weeks ago at phones4U, they gave her a free nokia as a spare.

Ratters, I dislike phones, I don't have a mobile and have no intentions of ever getting one.

Sqad - That is what he told me , he was advised , by his consultant.

I asked him why they had to open him up , why they couldn't do key hole surgery .
He says that he was advised that because of where the blockage was - at the junction of the 3 valves , they were unable to use that procedure .

It was a valuable piece of posting to AB.

I just tried to put a bit of flesh on it and put it into perspective.

Some surgeries are so fed up with patients not keeping appointments that they do text reminders, this is true - our surgery has a big notice up saying how many appointments were not kept in the last month and how much time and scarce NHS money was wasted as a result. Not all practices offer ECGs, they can only do it if their staff are trained - I have to go to my local hospitals for ECG monitoring.
