Today a Speeding Driver was sentenced to 8 MONTHS in Prison for killing a 12 year old boy on a crossing. No doubt he will be out in under 4 months.Does anyone think you get a harsher sentence if you steal money?

I totally agree. Sometimes sentences appear not to relate to the crime in question.

That is odd
I presume he was charged with causing death by dangerous driving - the *starting point* for this offence should be 12 months to 2 years

Unless he was charged with the newer offences of causing death by careless driving - without more details it is hard to say.
Comparing this with theft isn't really a good example - because there is the issue of intent. A thief doesn't accidently steal money nor did this person deliberately kill a child.
A long prison sentence is unlikely to deter others in crimes where there is no intent and this person is presumably not a danger to the community

When I lived in the UK a similar crime occurred where a local pub landlord lost control of his range rover whilst drunk and careered into a bus queue killing 2 children. His sentence was very similar to the one above. His spell in prison was not comfortable as his fellow inmates victimised him and when he was released he was beaten up by aggrieved relatives of the dead children until he was forced to live elsewhere.
