Is there any way of repelling these vile little beasts? sorry to all fans, but they cause absolute panic in my house every night. any chemical products, for example?

Even though I adore wildlife these little beasts score a zero. with me. The good news is that they will be gone by October - and really the only sure way to prevent them coming in is to close your windows - or turn off the lights as the latter is what is attracting them in the first place. Might be preferable to drenching every thing in  foul smelling insect spray.

Oh well cheers anyway...will spend the month bumping into things and save on the leccy at the same time :)

I don't like them either but luckily I have aircon so I can keep the house cool and ventilated but the windows closed. Another solution is to buy those blue lamp insectocuters. I have two,. A good hoover such as a Dyson with a long tube will suck them out of the air should one get in say if the door is open.

If you have a cat they are very good at catching them. As to sprays, the ordinary pyrethrum type you buy in the shops are too slow acting and the Crane Fly will if sprayed go haywire flying about at high speed until it dies. Raid is far faster acting almost immediate on this species but is a lot more dangerous to pets etc. As said they have their season from about now till the start of October and the forst fronst kills them off.

It's ironic how many people are phobic about Tipula Paludosa to give it its Latin Name , as they dont, bite, sting, carry germs etc but give people the creeps.
