Why when accellerating away are there clouds of black smoke being emitted, but which disappear when motoring normally ??

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.possibly you are pressing the accelerator to hard when the engine is going slowly. when you press the accelerator on a diesel more fuel is injected into the cylinders, If the engine is going slowly it cannot suck enough air in to burn the fuel completely so you get a lot of soot in the exhaust. Check that the air cleaner is not clogged and if it still does it then it may be that the injectors are not spraying properly. Another possible cause is that air is passing the piston rings. A symptom of this is difficult starting and excessive venting from the crankcase.
