Phone Advice please

I have purposely put this posting here because I want peoples opinion & not technical advice, I have always had Nokia phones because they are simple to use and will connect to my laptop with Nokia PC suite where I can store/retrieve info on my phone,
my contract is almost up for renewal which means I get to choose a new phone, I was looking at the Nokia X6 but have been told by a few people not to touch it with a bargepole and that a better choice would be the HTC Desire.
Has anybody got any experience of this handset? if so advice please, I would only want it to make calls plus a few texts but I would also like the capability to connect to the net sometimes.

Don`t know much about phones but this caught my eye because on my works forum, my colleagues (who always seem to have the latest gadgets) are raving about the HTC Desire. They said it`s much better than the iphone. If I was going to get a better phone that`s what I would get just because of their reviews
