Puritanism was the epitomy of a "works" based faith, and as such led to many persecutions of it's own members as well as some outside that denomination. It did, however, lead to the "Great Awakening" of the mid to late 18th and early 19th centuries in America... perhaps the largest revival movement experienced, at least in the New World...
