deodorant for boys

Hi, my son is nearly 11 and in the hot weather is sweating a lot. He's not smelly, just sweaty. He's having a shower each evening but i wonder if he should be using deodorant/anti-perspirant. I think he's a bit young, but he does seem to be quite hormonal - he's developed oily/spotty skin and so on. Any ideas?

Sweat doesn't smell. It is the dried bacteria forming that lets off the pong.

Not a father myself, but I don't think I started using it until about 14.

My advice, because I have an opinion on everything, is just insure he washes and baths more than the usual 11 year old boy.

Just remember everyone different and at that age he needs to be feeling as comfortable as possible how about you ask him what he wants to do he may want to use it If you want a good deod. use Mitchem roll on it honestly works.

if you think he needs it get it, doesnt matter what age he is. you can get picked on and bullied at any age for being the smelly kid.

I would let him use some, probably make him shower in the mornings then have a quick spray or roll on, dress lightly (no heavy jumpers). I think generally when they hit puberty is probably the best time to start

Even if the sweat doesnt smell, if he is perspiring heavily it will be visible on his clothes. I dont see any problem with using anti-perspirant , and everyone develops at different ages so there is no right or wrong answer. Make some available to him and let him make up his own mind. Also buy him a face wash containing salicylic acid it is good for oily skin and has antibacterial properties to help prevent breakouts.

hi growbag, my son is 12 and uses deodorant daily, as Joe said makes sure he showers more often, it's a sweaty age!! my son doesnt like roll on, just the spray (attracts the girls more like) let him use some it'll be ok xx

We had the best teacher in the world when I was 11, and she told the whole class that we were allowed to bring deo/anti p to school to use after games. We all did, because she made it seem cool, and we all took great delight in comparing favourites. (Mine was Norsca - who remembers that one?!??) I know I'm not a boy, but she herself had/has 4 sons, all a bit older than me. She must have been talking from experience! I'll certainly let my boys use it at that age if the need is there.

I dont think he is too young,by the time he is twelve it will be hair gel and aftershave,i dont think its to attract girls more for aunts and grandmas to tell them how handsome they look, if hes okay with it i shouldnt worry.

growbag, my own son is 11 and he absolutly hums after any physical activety. He baths everynight and has a complete change of clean clothes everyday. He uses deodorant a lot and I let him pick his own. Sometimes its easy to forget that they are growing up into small adults and are no longer just 'kids'. As 4getmenot says, they can get bullied at any age for being the smelly kid - and I know from experience how difficult that can be. (my parents werent the most understanding folks when it come to my personel hygeine.One bath a week and that was it)

Growbag, you shouldn't worry. If you think your son is a bit young, my daughter is only 9 and going through puberty already and sprouting all over. Poor little thing, she's horrified. And if I'm honest so was I! I thought it would be a couple more years at least. She's very active and gets terribly smelly armpits if she doesn't use an antiperspirant/deodorant.

If your son is happy to use a deodorant then I don't see a problem with it myself.

I dont think he is too young at all, some girls of 9 wear bras!

Its good to teach body hygine to kids, nothing worse than kids picking on other kids cos they smell.

I would suggest roll on/solid rather than spray though but thats a personal thing, heard to many horror stories about aerosols.

Hi everyone, thanks for replying. I think we'll go down the route of spray-on deodorant as that seems to be the best solution.

My girls started using deodorant at 8 years old but I insist on them using a natural deodorant likr they sell at http://www.teendeodorant.com it smelling great and they love the packaging.
