It refers to US gallons.
Here in the UK it's over USD6 per (US) gallon. If we take the view that prices aren't going to go down any time soon, (New Orleans disaster will have adverse effect on USA prices - loss of huge amount of refining capacity), then we either lobby governments to lower fuel duty/VAT or drive more fuel-efficient cars. The latter would be no bad thing for the environment either. It's gonna be tough but I think the USA's love affair with big SUV's etc is coming to an end. I'm just sad I never got to own one before it all went pear shaped. Alternatively, drive something small for everyday use and a monster for weekends etc.
I think the best selling vehicle in the US is a Ford pick-up with a huge gas-guzzling engine. Hopefully the increase in fuel prices will make America wake up to the huge amount of pollution and waste their country causes. I read somewhere that the average American uses EIGHT times as much energy as thye aveage European.
