Does anyone know how to go about getting a dog passport and the procedure  thanks min x

OK, first phone your vet, who will be able to give you the full details and cost.

The procedure involves having the dog microchipped, then vaccinated against rabies.  Then a blood sample must be taken (usually about 30 days after the vaccine was administered) and sent to a lab to check that the dog has responded adequately to vaccination.  A passport can then be issued.

One very important point is that the animal in question is not allowed to re-enter the UK until 6 months after the date of the successful blood sample was taken.

So it's vital that you organise this well in advance.  I'd also advise you to think long and hard about whether it is fair to take your pet on holiday - for example, long journeys and different weather conditions can make dogs really, really miserable.  Check out www.defra.gov.uk for more info - it's called the PETS scheme.

Plus you will need to have the dog vaccinated against internal parasites, and given anti-tick treatment before travelling. This needs to be done at least 24 hours, but not more than 48 hours before travelling.

We regularly take our dog to France. Once you have the passport its easy.Make sure the booster is given every 2 years and don't forget to go to the vet 24 - 72 hours before you come home for tic and worm treatment, he certifies these have been given in the passport. Our French vet charges about 35euros.

We use speedferries(Dover to Boulogne) it takes 50 mins and our dog is quite happy in the car.
