My fathers Mercedes E-class 220 CDI is very heavy on tyre wear on the rear tyres since he bought it 3 years ago. He is fastidious on checking the pressures etc but is not getting a good mileage from them having to change them every 12 months average mileage 7 k and not motorway miles. Fitted Brigestone then Michelin and now it seems they want changing again. Is this usual ? it is only the rear that wears excessively. Any views
Are the rear springs excessively worn?
What is the stance of the car like at the rear?
Ask a tyre place to do a rear wheel camber check.
Usually, it is RWD cars like this and BMW's that wear the inner edges sometimes excessively, because of rear spring sag or permanent heavy loads carried.
thankyou Albags.I Will tell my dad to get his rear tracking checked when he takes it today for tyres. There are no heavy loads carried and stance of car appears to be ok.The front springs were changed last year. The rear tyre pressures are 35 psi compared to front 30psi as hand book and car sticker and it would appear that the wear is consistant with over inflate in centre of the tyre. A mechanic friend said to drop pressure down to 32psi to see if it cures it but father reluctant in case it invalidates insurance. He is not happy with the average price of a tyre being £125 plus and losing a tyre after 1500 miles by a wood screw going through the tyrewall and then wearing after 5000
OK .. Tyres can be bought at better price. This beast's tyres are less than that usually.
Wear in centre is down to over-inflation .. or tyre design/model.
Solved problem and I advised him to go to specsavers.
the instructions for the pressures is on the Fuel Cover, and is indicated by illustration of people effigies and luggage, more people, more luggage, more load, more pressure. He was actually using the top rated load pressure all the time, hence over- inflation. Safe to use but should be reduced asap back to normal load conditions. Thank you Albags for your input
