I know it's the prize crossword, so I shouldn't really ask, but I'm not going to finish it, or send in my entry, or anything, so ...

Please just get me started ... anyone?

Good morning JJ

I haven't looked at my copy yet but what I usually do is solve as many clues as possible and put them in the margin.
I then concentrate on the two longest words and pencil those into the grid. Some of the clues already solved will provide crossing letters and off you go.

I now see there are 4 ten letter words but by pencilling them in you can eliminate some options.

Hmm ... not sure about this "in the margin" thing. You make it sound easy. I'm too reliant on crossing letters to help me along.

I'm going to watch Brighton this afternoon. Maybe I'll set off early and take the crossie to the pub with me (and a book, for when I give up on the crossie).

The correct solution is obtained by putting DETACH & JUST across; DELICT & JOMO down. The right-hand perimeter then spells RIGHT, the bottom perimeter spells BOTTOM

Guys ... I appreciated your help on this but, after staring at it some more over coffee just now ...

... yesterday's paper, including the crossword, has gone in the recycling bag.

Araucaria? I just KNEW I shouldn't have bothered trying.
