I have a Homecare agreement with British Gas which covers all repairs and servicing to my boiler. I have now been quoted to upgrade that to cover plumbing and electrics but at £36.92 per month for me and £22.97 for new customers I feel slightly as if I'm being mugged over.

Does anyone know of any other similar types of cover avaialble so I can get an alternative quote?

Hello meglet,
I had the BG cover for the Central Heating. Their costs were escalating, despite my loyalty. I had a quote from Southern Electricity, for the same cover that saved me £60.00 in the first year. I did give BG the opportunity to reassess their quote, they refused to do so. I have never had "Electrics Cover" from BG. Southern Electricity do offer it as part of a package with the "CH" homecare agreement, but I cannot help with any indication of their charges.

They also offered £40.00 off my energy bill if I switched to them. I didn't. The following phone number may help with any contact with "SE".

0845 076 0525

I found the switch from BG painless, and the "SE" "Engineer" phoned to tell me approximately when he would arrive to do the initial inspection and service.
I've got a contract with the plumbers who installed my boiler, they maintain it every year - £65 p.a.
£443 per year is a typical British Gas rip-off if you ask me.
Speak to a local plumber/boiler fitter.
A decent brand boiler should give very little trouble for years.

Mmm. The cover expires at the end of Oct so I think I'll cancel it. Having one contract that covers all the electrics and plumbing and boiler sounded like a good idea but frankly nothing has gone wrong so I may as well chance it. I think you can be over-insured actually.

I have a relatively small sum in a savings account (£1000) and a credit card for these emergencies.
30 years on I'm still waiting for the emergency.
dont bother with homserve, thats what contents and building insurance is for, same thing, your building insurance will cover drains, plumbing etc, your house insurance should cover electrics
Personally I will not do any business with British Gas.

They are on Witchdog and in the papers so often for poor service that I wouldn't trust them.
yer and they probably use homeserve who are pretty cr@p too if you do have anything wrong, slowly losing contracts all over the place

I think a rainy day account with existing building and contents cover is the best option. Thanks all.
