New Hotpoint Gas Cooker
8 Answers
I`m getting a new one delivered tomorrow and am very annoyed at the fact that I have to get an Corgi Fitter in to just push in a bayonet plug and will charge about £40 -£50 for about 5 seconds work, and then squirt a bit of washing up liquid around the joint to test it. I have had 3 new gas stoves in the past and always fitted them safely myself with no problem. What would happen if happen if I did it myself again, does anyone check it out?

Have you got the gas pipe, as new machines don't come with them. Dont want to put you off but I have recently bought a Cannon gas cooker which is the same firm as Hotpoint and are made in the same place and am glad I had it fitted properly as I have had a lot of trouble with it. I am now on the third cooker as the engineers could not get the first two to work properly. If it wasn't fitted properly in the first place it will make the warranty void. Also your house insurance will not pay up if a problem occurs due to the cooker and it wasn't fitted by Gas Safe engineer..
we don't just push in a bayonet plug and charge £50 !
first we examine the exisiting installation and see if it conforms to the latest regulations or if there are any other problems, safety hazards etc.
then we connect the hose to the cooker using joint sealing compound and connect to the gas supply.
then we check for any leaks.
Then we level and make the cooker stable.
then we have to commission the cooker, light and examine all burners, test all controls and safety devices.
then we have to instruct the customer in the use of the appliance.
also take in to account the money we have to spend every year on gas safe registration, assessments, training courses, public liability insurance, company vehicle, tools etc.
lastly, compare us to british gas who charge twice the price !
