Will that make a difference Butch?
I would think the temperature that you are cooking at would be a factor in this,ie simmering something is bound to use less energy that a ferocious roasting!

First time doing it, was going to boil it, then thought easier to just bung it in oven
I find it too dry when roasted.
Gas. Almost instant heat .. BTU's going straight into the pan. When it boils you turn it down. This will save too.
Electric ovens emit a lot of heat over large area, and need all that time to heat up.

guess pros and cons with both then.
Buy yourself a slow cookpot they're really cheap to run and you get succulent meat.

have already got one
i would simmer in coca cola x
Bacon joint with an apricot and cider coating is lovely, but you need to do it in the oven. We usually boil for a while then finish is off in the oven.
I always boil...then bake....I like to keep the utility companies happy!
Seriously though-It comes out beautifully. The boiling rids it of excess salt-then I rub a mixture of brown sugar and grain mustard into the skin-which I have scored. It comes out moist with a crispy sweet skin.....hmmmmmm.
How about microwaving it on high for a bit then finishing it in the oven? Just a thought...
You wouldn't be boiling it violently for an hour, simmering surely? If so, then electric oven much dearer.
If it were a typical 3kW single oven then it would use 3kW in an hour, so 3kWh or 3 units of electricity. At the typical Uk rate of ~15p per kWh, then this would be ~45p per hour.

Don't forget the thermostat will be turning the element on/off as necessary thus not full on all the time, so costs less than that in reality.

If it's a 4Kw oven then ~60p per hour, 5kW would be ~75p per hour.

Not sure how you'd measure how much Gas you would use, in comparison, as I'm an electrician not a plumber ;-)
