Wireless Network Booster?

Hi, Can anyone help please. I need a gadget that I can plug in upstairs to enhance the signal from my Wireless Modem. The Modem is downstairs, my son has to connect his Xbox with a Really Long ethernet cable so that he can use his Xbox upstairs.

I believe there is a gadget that I can plug in upstairs so that he wont need to use the ethernet cable. Does anyone know what the correct name for it is and where is the best place for me to buy it from.

They are called wireless range extenders and can be a pain to setup and even then won't always guarantee you'll get a decent connection.

Hi,

You can use a device that's know as Ethernet over Power.
You get 2 power plugs, one to go next to your router and the other somewhere else in the house. This will use your power cables to transfer the data.

Thankyou ChuckFickens. I had a look at the link. Im not sure I understand though. I thought the point of these things was so I didnt need to use ethernet cables. If this is the case, why would they be supplied with ethernet cables.??

vinchenzison has linked to the same sort of products as I did.

They use the mains electricity wiring of your house to transmit the network signal, so you plug one of the boxes in my link into a spare wall socket near the router and connect it to the router with a cable and then plug the second one into a socket near the Xbox and use another cable to connect that to the xbox which will allow the xbox to get online without having a cable trailed right across the house.

It basically replaces the long cable your son is currently using by using the power cable as the network cable, but you still need to use a cable at each end for the device.
The other option I guess is to use this in conjunction with a wireless access point on the end, but then you'd need to make sure your xbox 360 has wireless (if it's glossy black and new then it does, unless you brought a separate xbox wireless adapter, which I'm guessing not since your using a cable)

Get the homeplug type devices. I use them for all my connectivity in the house including Xbox and PS3 and they have never let me down. Highly recommended.

Do these devices have to be plugged into the same ring circuit?
Some houses have a ring circuit for upstairs and one for downstairs.

As long as the separate ring mains are all connected back to the same Consumer Unit then they work fine.
