doctors note

if i need to leave work early for a doctors appointment.... does my employer have the right to ask for a doctors note? if it is only for an afternoon? thx

Yes, I think they can do. Usually if you have an appointment letter, you can just give them a copy of that (if it's a hospital visit), I've done that before. I've also written little notes for patients to their managers to let them know they've had an appt to see my consultants in the past too.

No, you can show them your appoinment card/letter if you have one though

depends on your workplace sickness/ absence policy, if the time requested appears unreasonable then most employers would; I suspect, ask for evidence...and most would have a reasonable expectation you would make appointments as late in the afternoon as possible so you minimise the time you need off...if someone working for me asked for a whole afternoon for a doctors appt I would be tempted to ask for evidence...or would ask them to try to rearrange it for later in the day or early in the morning.

Thanks all of you. rowanwitch, i will be leaving at 1.00 for a 3 o'clock appt as i live 2 hours away from work, that's reasonable?

if you couldn't get a later one.. If someone said I tried to get one after 4pm but they'd all gone that would be reasonable...if they persistantly couldn't I would start asking for proof by the third or fourth occasion...its a pain living so far from work i had that problem some years back..and it does make it hard to fit things in
