Canon Pixma MP510 error when scanning

Hi,
Trying to use the scanner on a Canon Pixma MP510 & it's returning an error

scangear error
printer maintenance is in progress. scan after it is completes. code:2,114,0

The inks are low on the printer but would this affect the scanner ? Was fine last time it was used.

For future ref, one cartridge was actually flashing as was so low on ink. Once that one was changed, the error disappeared.
May be of help to someone, sometime ...
