Toshiba DVD/VCR combo power problem...
13 Answers
Hi everyone! I'm stuck here - a TOSHIBA RD-XV59DT DVD/250GB HDD/VCR RECORDER COMBO bought for a neighbour from e-Bay arrived today.
I cabled it up, turned it on & tuned it in ok. All of a sudden, it turned itself off & now won't power up - it'll start up, then turn off instantly.
I'd be truly grateful for any help!
Thanks for your time & attention, Lie-in King

All I can think of is to disconnect HDMI lead from the TV or if there is more than one HDMI socket on back of TV , you could swap. Try switching Combo Unit on without connecting to TV to see if the 'Fault' still occurs. It may be that the unit is faulty but you could try the above first.

Hi redman & thanks, but no HDMI leads involved! Aerial in to box, cabled back to TV, SCART from box to TV...
I've tried the "have you turned it off & on again" approach with no luck - it won't stay powered up long enough for me to try anything else!?
It's a nice bit of kit, reviewed well & seemed just right for my friend, but now I feel that I've let him down because he trusted me to get it for him...
Pours a large drink & hits the "Geek Sites"...

Thanks for your answers - fender, I used to be a mainframe operator & remember well the "hit it & hope" option, which occasionally worked, though it's generally unadvisable! The unplugging overnight is worth a try & I'll have a go as a last resort before complaining...
red - you're quite right, it's just unfortunate that when I've tried to do something nice for a friend, it's turned out badly!.. I'll try the "stand-alone" option first, though, just to be sure...

Thanks for the benefit of your experience, red - it doesn't mitigate the embarrassment though...
I do wish that everyone here would stop thinking of me as "He who can solve problem"...
Anyway, it's looking as though the box is going back - hopefully successfully - I've never had to return anything from eBay before...

...I left it alone for a night & tried it "stand-alone" again with no joy. I took the batteries out of the remote in case a button was stuck, no luck...
The seller replied (?) -
"We have similar problem before with other items
like that, the reaso why its happend is that in
our warehouse is cold and on delivery company
depots as well so we suggest to wait with testing
about 2 hours to make sure that item temperature
rise to house temperature, so please leave your
item for a while and try one more time later
should be alright and one more question its swich
off when you play dvd or vhs?"
Is it me, or is that just so much - & I apologise for the language - cr@p?
It's got to go back - hasn't it?
