I have had items stolen from my hose during the day whilst someone was in the house. My wife was upstairs getting ready fro work and the kids had gone to school and not locked the front door. My misses later noticed that my laptop ad our iMac where gone from the front room. The curtains were still shut so I am assuming that whoever knicked them must have already known that the iMac at least was there, the Macbook was just an added bonus today. They have left the charger behind and the keyboard and trackpad. My question is this where do i stand with my insurance regarding the door being unlocked. Also I have my proof of purchase for my Macbook but not for the iMac as it was a present form my parents when they went to the US.

Any help is gratefully welcomed

You live in a hose! You must be very thin.

When you say the front door wasnt locked...did the kids when leaving not actually shut the door?

If the front door was open, an opportuntist thief has seized his chance and grabbed what they could...they dont have to have known there was an iMac there, they would have just grabbed what they could and scarpered

Claiming for the theft of these 2 items is doubtful as stated below it is as usual standard term that forced/violent entry must have taken place......otherwise they'd be false claims galore of people saying theyd had stuff stolen.

I assume youve been to the police, and have a crime reference number.
It's worth notifying your insurance company as long as you have a crime number, but I think you are on thin ice if the door was left open - if your house was open then the insurance company could see it as contributory negligence. Burglary requires forcible entry but it depends whether your policy would cover this sort of theft situation. Sounds like an opportunist to me, must have tried the door and found it unlocked?
Sorry, but lol @ Jan !

Shiz... get in touch with your insurance company and see what they say. I hope it works out for you. x
Are you expected to keep all doors locked when the house is occupied? I don't think so...
And just to be my usual pedantic self, you haven't actually been robbed, you've been burgled.

Of course, I understand that it makes no difference to you, but it makes a considerable difference to the perpetrator, should heor she be caught.
NewJudge, in my insurance days we used to define burglary as forcible entry, and anything where you could just walk in and talk something as theft. Robbery was with some sort of weapon or tool which threatened the robbed person. Have they changed the definitions? I have always understood these to be correct since the 1970s.
Yes, that's about right boxtops (although burglary does not have to involve forced entry, just illegal entry).

As I understand it no force against the person was involved here. It seems the miscreant just walked in and took the unattended goods.

Thanks everyone, sorry for being a bit touchy. Anyhoo, the door was shut, they just didn't lock it as their Mum was in and up and about. I have contacted the police but they said that because there has been no forceable entry that there is nothing that they can do, I find this absolutely ridiculous. They said that they would send me the usual "Dear Victim" letter and gave me a crime number. We only moved in this house 3 weeks ago, fortunately I stayed with the same insurance company, but it all sounds so dodgy, even to me. All I can do is try and make a claim I suppose, it's a sad day when you have to keep yourselves locked in your home.

Thanks again everyone, love to you all x
