Playmate for my dogue

I would love another dog. I have a dogue de bordeaux, he is very sociable with other dogs so therefore, I would love another one. I don't think we should get another dog that is so big, he's quite a lump to have around as it is. I absolutely adore the look of Boston Terriers and French bulldogs, but it turns out they are absolutely horrendously expensive. Bedlington terriers have aslo caught my eye on the school run but then again I love the look of airdales.

Does anyone have any idea how these dogs mix with other dogs and how noisy they are, I like that my Reggie isn't a barker and the only noise he makes is when he's snoring for England? Also the Boston Terriers and French Bulldogs were around the 1500 mark, does that sound about right?

How's about an amiable little mongrel. They are usually much more placid and easier than the breeds. A rescued mongrel would cost you a donation!

Beddlingtons are lovely but need lots of excercise and things to keep them occupied as do most terriers.

I agree with LL - a mutt from the dog pound might be a good idea. Or a border terrier - lovely looking little dogs with a good character.

£1500 is the minimum you would pay for a 'pet' Boston or Frenchie, they are around £2000 for show/breeding quality. Although your Dogue may be good with other dogs, most of the terrier breeds will want to take on the role of top dog, particularly if you have another male. They also tend to be noisier than some of the bigger breeds. Why don't you check out some Dogue breeders, to see what other breeds they have, they tend to go for the same types i.e. many people who have my breed (Heelers) also have Rotties maybe because of the similarity in colouring.

I was wondering about whether the terrier type dogs would have that in them Lankeela. I know they seem to love to try to take him on when he's out and about.

Terriers are feisty and do tend to worry other dogs. I absolutely adore terriers and wouldn't have anything else (well I might if one landed on my doorstep!). However, a terrier might wear poor Reggie out. Again, I would recommend a mutt or a cross breed who has already been proved to get on well with other dogs and be even tempered.

can I suggest too that if you are thinking of getting a pup, the pups of small breeds can be fragile. I know your dogue is gentle but is he also careful?

Believe it or not he is gentle and careful, he's not once tread on the cat or my mum's jack russells even when they were pups, as cute as they are they're a bit too noisy for me too. And you are spot on about the wearing him out thing? Thus far I have found out that people with dogues also have akitas and rotties, neither are a dog that I would ever want to look after or feel confident with. Found a guy with a neoplitan mastiff and boxers, who also has dogues. I love the italian mastiffs but there seems to be a lot of sneaking about with crossing them presa canario and I wouldnt want that either.

As woofgang has already stated, you will need to be so careful having any puppy, we have only just started allowing our Wolfhound puppy to spend unaccompanied time with our big boys, they weigh over 10.5 stone each and if they were to get over playful with a pup it could be fatal, even lying down on one could cause so much damage.

Terriers really are feisty tough little characters but would you want them creating havoc with your Dogue in your lounge? :-)

I would go for a Jack Russel or just say sod it and go for another Dogue, that's how we ended up with three wolfies and now when we buy cars, furniture, carpets etc the first consideration is always the dogs.

We wouldn't have it any other way :-)

Why not get a Dogue bitch and either have the male castrated or the bitch spayed, so they can live hapily together without any problems? Bitches of this breed are not that big compared to the dogs and they would be able to play easily without endangering life and limb! (Theirs, that is - yours might be at risk if the way my GSD puppy plays is anything to go by)
