How can I tell if something is made of Brass?

After the dull gold colour, the weight .. and it's non-magnetic.

If it's a clock, and looks like brass, than it almost certainly is.
How old is it, and what sort of clock is it?

Clock movements are usually one of three materials ..
Steel .. Brass ... Wood.
If magnetic it is steel. The rest you can figure.

Now that you have said it is a clock it makes things a bit clearer. If it looks like brass then it is likely to be brass. Depending on the exact composition of the brass it can look and feel different.
I was thinking about bronze, pinchbeck and other yellowish metals but they are not often used for clocks.

So you are identifying .. not comparing.

It is the clock surround that is made of brass Vagrant.
It is a JUNGHANS ELECTRONIC M1000 QUARTZ with a plastic battery cover so it will hardly be ancient.
What does puzzle me is that it loses and sometimes gains a couple of minutes a day - I thought quartz clocks were supposed to be very accurate.
Anyone got and ideas?

rub your hands all over it...if your hands then have a very strange string smell...then its brass

If it is that recent, more likely brass plate over base metal.

could be ormalu but unlikely if it is modern and cheap.

that should have been ormolou, but it won't be that anyway, I have just discovered.
