Pre operation injection

A friend is going into hospital in a few days for a replacement knee operation. At her pre op tests she was asked if she could inject herself in the stomach the night before. Although she agreed reluctantly she has found a nurse to do it for her. However, noone has explained the reason for this although lots of advice about pain after the op and aftercare at home. None of her friends who have similar ops have had this experience. She would like to know what it is and what it is for if someone can advise thanks

Absolutely NO IDEA.

I would NOT inject myself with ANYTHING unless I knew what it was.

A guess?.....Minihep....an anticoagulant that would prevent post operative venous thrombosis.
But there again, there is a downside....it would make the operation more bloody and technically more difficult. So unless you have had a past history of blood clotting, then I say again.........NO IDEA.

i had a hip replacement 3 weeks ago. I had an injection of tinzaparin for 3 nights before hand. This is a anti-coagulant, which helps prevents clots. Tinzaparin is out of your system in about 18 hours so i had it about 4 pm the day before and then had the op about 11 am.
Who knows what your friends injection is? As squad says, i wouldn't inject myself with anything unless i knew what it was for

My good lady Carakeel AKA Mrs RATTER had both her knees replaced a couple of years ago, she didn't have to give herself any injections before hand. Strange!

I think that it varies from unit to unit.

OK, Ive never heard of it, I ain't no expert though, I just know what Carakeel went through.

A long recovery but she now has 2 very good legs, she waited 17 years for the operation and now never looks back, no more crutches :-))

A biddie_in, lol?? Hiya anneasquith! Thanks for asking him, was starting to wonder myself, lol! :o) We hope to marry in our secret garden sort of July-ish, when all is in bloom and we can have a hog roast & lamb roast etc, lots of Wolfies around and our grandchildren etc. Lots of work to do in the garden though to get it ready. When I was in hospital I had a jab in the stomach everyday for DVT prevention. My mum also had the same injections when she had her knee replaced. I would assume that this is what the jab is. Although like Sqad says I would not be injecting myself with anything until I knew what it was.

not to be difficult here but i am willing to bet that your friend WAS told what the injection was for and hasn't retained what she has been told......actually anything like that should be given in a written as well as a verbal format.
