it has something to do with restricted bandwidth i.e. the picture could be much better but they restrict it. When you purchase a large screen tv you notice the picture quality is noticably worse than a smaller tv as the same image is stretched to suit the bigger screen. hd imo simply brings the picture back to the quality you had before!

thank you all for answers, when i bought this tv i was told i didn't need to pay for HD because it was built in the tv.I dont think i could get a better a picture than what i am getting,so do you think i am already receiving it.My brother was paying for HD and even tho he had a really good make tv the picture was terrible.
4getmenot. It is possible to get 'old' movies in HD and Blu Ray. I don't quite know what process they use to change to HD, but it is possible. I have recently purchased Enter the Dragon on Blu Ray, and the quality is exceptional for a film made in the 70's.
1240kath, I have had Sky HD since January, and it costs me an extra £10 per month. Some of the HD programmes do not seem much better than standard, but some of them are excellent, especially sports and the nature documentaries. Sky HD is still nowhere near as good as Blu Ray though.
