server disconnecting
7 Answers
I have had a problem in recent weeks with having to keep reconnecting to server
Have netgear router with wired connection to PC upstairs and laptop downstairs (router upstairs)This was happening from time to time and was resolved by pulling plug from router and then replacing and still does except that it is now happening more and more frequently. I contacted the server and carried out their instruction to check phone lines and router settings etc and reported back to them and they say this points to a hardware or internal problem. They suggest trying with a borrowed router/modem and I have contacted my local 'expert' He has asked if I have tried changing the filter (don't know how or where') or running router from a different phone point. If this is my best way forward can anyone tell me how or some other way of pinpointing the fault whilst waiting for him to come back to me - many thanks

Ignore your computers, if the tick light is going out on the router then it's got nothing to do with anything your computers are doing
See how you go with the new filter, if you still get disconnects all the time you really do need to try it with the router plugged into the master socket even if it means stringing cables around the place for a day.
If it works...

The disconnection affects both computers and both are wired My husband changed his PC for the laptop a long time ago and we found it worked better after we had that too wired. I have another laptop which I use wirelessly
I have just made a list/note of what is lit up on router at present (connected) numbers 3, 4 at top not lit up (?not in use) Sideways tick only other not green I think this flashes orange when reconnecting. I will look at differences when it goes off again and report back. While on this site I looked at a few other problems and their resolution in particular AVG update I updated this yesterday now version 10.0.1136 and downloaded malaware recommended and did quick scan no problems found
thanks chuck

The tick is the light that tells you if the router has got a connection to your ADSL, if that is going out then you either have a problem with your phone line or the phone wiring in your house.
I'd agree with the "local expert" that an easy first thing to try is changing the filter, the filter is a little box that will be plugged into your phone socket and then the router is plugged into that, you probably got a couple with the router so try changing it for the other one.
As for running it from a different phone point, they are best connected to the main BT master socket, so if it's currently plugged into an extension socket you may get better results by moving it to the master socket.

My connection was lost again have plugged in and working again all green lights were flickering except bottom one, tick has not lit up After a few minutes the two signals below numbers are still flickering but AVG icon at bottom of screen is still turning as well. I have found the spare filter and connected it (after reconnection). The master socket (first entry) is too far away to connect router and has not been used for years. (I think it may have been used with a long extension ages ago but we have a very reliable neighbour ex BT engineer who sorted it) He also helped us out when BT messed everything up last year when we had a problem with the phone line and wanted to charge us over £100 just realised AVG performing scheduled scan

If it works fine plugged into the master socket then get your ex BT friend to replace your internal extension wiring (preferably with at least CAT5 cable) if you get the same problems plugged into the master socket then you may have a fault on your phone line (or it's just a bad phone line)

Thanks again Chuck I think stringing cables (even if I had any) is a bit beyond my capabilities. Won't speak too soon but don't think it has disconnected again since filter change although tick does not light up still. I have a feeling that extension already had its wiring updated after the BT debacle. If the problem continues I will ring and ask him - he'll be sure to remember and it sounds as if it may be something he can fix
