Baby eczema
15 Answers
My baby has eczemaall over his body and on his cheek. I've been prescribed Aqueous (sp) cream and steroids but it won't go away. He's had it for a few months now and his cheek is always weeping and bleeding.
I've got an appointment with a dermatologist on 15th Nov but is there anything else I can do in the meantime as he's constatly rubbing his cheek with his scratch mitt which makes it worse.

Try to keep his nails cut short. Lather the Aqueous cream on him , you can use that as soap too. Dont use any other products on his skin. Keep wrapped up with this cold weather too, as it will dry out his skin.
My two have Eczema, all over, and when they were tiny it was on their little faces :(
I now use Aveeno lotion, and Oilatum in their baths. Plus as much as they don't like it, once a week I buff them with infacare in the bath then slap the cream on when they all dry.
Steriod cream is only really used to clear a bad bad flare up, to my knowledge, so we need to be careful using it a long time as it can thin the skin.
I went to the baby clinic rather than the docs with the diagnosis for my babies, & was referred to the skin clinic at my local hospital pretty much straight away. Good luck, it's not nice for you as a mum as well as your little fella.
Ooh and BTW I had wet bandages when I was younger my eczema was that bad, my kids so far have escaped all that, I wish you well, and good luck x

Thanks momcj ansd NiallsMama,
I use Oilatum in his bath. He flares up badly one of his cheeks but he always manages to scratch himself even with scratch mitts. I have to put socks on his hands but he still rubs his cheek. It kills me every time he makes it bleed but I don't know what else to do. I'm constantly putting Aqueous cream on him.
Last time I was at the Docs I was waiting in the waiting area and one woman said in Turkish that it looked like his face was burn't. Little did she know that I understood her and I felt awful.

I have eczema and stopped using aqueous cream and Oilatum as both irratated me. I now only use Aveena products and Epaderm ointment (Not the cream) which you need to have a prescription for. My skin has never looked so good.
There is an ingredient called Sodium Lauryl Sulphate, found in most shampoos, showering gels etc. I try and stay away from anything with this in although Epaderm does have it in but doesn't irritate me. Strange.

Tiggerblue....it sounds as though the lesions in his cheek is infected and that you have little choice but to put on antibiotic cream with or without the steroid and if you have any to hand then I would start to use if on the cheek straight away.
Is the aqueous cream Boots E45? If so continue with this and the steroid cream until 15th Nov.
Google Besniers Prurigo

Hi Sqad,
The second time I went to the GP I was prescribed canestan with antibiotics so I'm using that at the moment. I've just washed him and smothered him in Aqueous cream and a thin layer of canestan on his cheek. the only problem is the pharmacist said to only use the canestan for 5 days which I have done otherwise it will thin the skin.

Not sure. I was reading the ingredients and thought it sounded helpful. Our youngest was born with very dry, flaky skin. The problem never really went away, but Oilatum helped temporarily, followed by baby oil after his baths. You don't want it to get into any sore patches though.
When the room's nice and warm, put a quilt down on the floor and let the baby kick about with no nappy or clothes on. Clothes are going to irritate the condition even more.
I'm sure you wash his clothes and bedlinen in the mildest detergent you can, but sometimes even fabric conditioner can make the condition worse. Keep on at your doctor, and as others've said, try not to use steroid creams too often.
All the best hun. x
