Does alcohol increase testosterone temporarily?
10 Answers
According to what I've read alcohol increases oestrogen and cortisol and inhibits testosterone production. But does it bind to the androgen receptor, as increased anger and the whole alpha male thing is usually seen with increased testosterone production? So am I right in saying that it does increase testosterone and then this rapidly decreases and is overtaken by rapidly rising eostrogen? This would explain the excessive emotional behaviour seen with drunks? And with the body's natural function to try and keep homeostatis the next morning many drunks have a calm behaviour which then evolves into anger and assertiveness once they've had their first drink so is this the cycle repeating itself?

I know women have a small amount of testosterone but if the scenes on tv or boozed up city streets at night are anything to go by, they can be just as aggressive as men.
To deviate - I`ve always wondered why the old rockers you see on tv (Ronnie Wood, Ozzy Osbourne, Keith Richards etc) still have a good head of hair. They`ve been drugged up and boozed up for decades but they still keep their hair. As testosterone is responsible for hair loss, could it be anything to do with the booze supressing it?

237sj From what I've read it is the hormone Dht and hereditary factors that's responsible for hairloss.

OK. First of all as far as men are concerned, persistent drinking decreases blood testosterone due to the toxic effects of the alcohol in the testes. However, moderate drinking does indeed cause a temporary rise in blood testorone.
In women, blood testosterone can become high regardless of the quantity of alcohol consumed. In addition, the effects of alcohol are more insidious in women as it can affect the menstrual cycle and bone formation.
