> dont go near norton.

What do you base that on, the product from 3 years ago?.

Norton now has an excellent reputation.

I am using Norton Internet Security and have no problems. It will be due for renewal soon and if I can get the new one about half list price, as I usually have been able to, I will stick with it.
Stop slagging Norton!
You know not what you are talking about ... and it shows.

Norton is much improved over the last two years. I have run it for 5 years on several machines, and the latest versions are well sorted.

I am convinced you get a better product with a paid-for AV software.
For instance, AVG free did not stop the SMSS virus on two of them, Norton 2010 did. It's a pain to remove.
Jeff .. problems you had are most likely of your own doing .. Like not properly removing old installations. That is the most common problem.
Avast .. Avira .. NOD32 .. F Secure .. Kasper .. and probably paid for AVG. All good.
Yep, agree with that ↑

If you really want free you can add comodo internet security and microsoft security essentials has also scored well in all independent tests lately (the problem with MSE though is it doesn't include a decent 2 way firewall)
Yep ... agreed .. forgot MSE!
Microsoft have put their name to it .. so it can't be bad.

Recently I helped 'Bez' offline to remove a bad PC infection. Needed RKill and Combofix to do it. AVG Free had let it in : (
Now she is on MSE. Time will tell.
I still love the Sygate Pro firewall .. since nearly 5 years. Unfortunately bought out by Norton and dissolved in favour of their own (which I don't thing is as good)
One thing I have NEVER trusted .. Windows Firewall.
If you're running Windows XP / Vista or 7, they all have a perfectly good firewall, as for general security, AVG FREE is tried and tested and works nicely, I also have A-Squared as an anti-malware backup.
The windows firewall is not two way, it will only stop the outside world from connecting to your computer, if your computer is infected by any malware it will do nothing to stop that malware sending whatever it wants to whoever it wants.

(and before anyone says "but the windows7 firewall is two way", it's not as default and it's not a simple job to switch it over to be two way)
We've just renewed with Norton, money well spent IMO.
I agree boxy,

Nothing at all wrong with norton at all these days, as AL said anyone who thinks it's crap is not up to date with the latest news and is reporting 2-3 year old information.
Last year my internet bank did a survey on internet security systems & offered a special deal to customers to buy Kaspersky which came out top of their list, I went for it & must say I have found it the best & will renew when the time comes.
You might even get Kasper free if you are with Barclays and tell them you do online banking .. even if you don't!
