Does anyone know ones legal rights regarding change of house names.  I have bought a property and my local council says I can't change the name of it because there is a No 1 and  No 2 and if I changed it there would mean that No 2 would be left on its own.  But its my property surely I can call it what I like ???

You can change your house name but you can't change the number.

You have to keep the number, but you can add a name, so you'd have something like

Cozeenook, 1 Coronation Street,

and your neighbour would simply be

2 Coronation Street.

Don't forget it is a legal requirement to clearly display your house name & number - think if an ambulance nedded to find your house!!

Thank you for your reply .. however this is a bit of a strange one.  The address is 1 ******* Cottages, ******* Lane, Town  and it is a semi, and next door is 2 ********* Cottages ********* Lane, Town so my argument is that there is no number to the street name and that the numbering is applying to the house name.   Therefore I don't see why I can't change the house name.
Solarjunkie's answer is correct. Once a property has a number (even when it's integrated into a composite name such as 1 Pretty Cottages) it can't legally be removed.

Solarjunkie is also correct about the legal requirement to display your house number. (It's OK to to display a name as well but you can only display a name on its own if the house has never had a number).

Remember, as well, that it's the combination of your house number and post code which identifies your location on numerous databases. If you apply for credit and give your address as 1 Pretty Cottages, Tree Lane, Oldtown, XY1 2AB the computer looks for you at 1XY12AB. If you give your address as Myhouse, Tree Lane, Oldtown, XY1 2AB the computer looks for you at MyhouseXY12AB and doesn't recognise you as the person living at 1XY12AB who has a perfect credit score - Result: credit refused!

Anyway, why this great desire to have a house with no number? Is your name Hyacinth Bucket by any chance? (LOL)
