I dont know the answer for sure - but I was listening to UB40 about 25 years ago - so they have quite a head start on Green Day.

Also there were more sales needed to chart in the 1980's

AND (probably) all of Green Days material is on CD not records.

altho ub40 have had a massive headstart,as far as im aware their biggest market is the uk whereas green day are globally successful and would have sold shedloads of records in the last 10 yrs or so.

so although i cant see why you are comparing the 2,i would go with green day.

This wiki link on best selling bands states that Green Day has sold over 20.000.000 records and UB40 has sold 50.000.000. Must admit I am a bit surpised as I was going for Green Day too, but anyway UB40 seems to be the winner.

Biggest difference I would say, is that Greenday have  sold 20,000,000 of their own songs, while UB40 have lived off other peoples lyrics

I agree that UB40 have had lots of cover versions - but they have written quite a bit of their own material too.
